Gregory Mthembu – Salter

Gregory Mthembu-Salter is a versatile professional with expertise in journalism, research, and writing, focusing on Africa’s political economy. Originally from the UK, he relocated to South Africa in the mid-1990s and currently resides in Scarborough on the Cape peninsula.

As a journalist, Gregory has contributed to esteemed publications such as the Mail & Guardian, The Africa Report, and various specialist African politics and economics journals. His extensive knowledge and experience have led him to serve as a member of the United Nations Group of Experts on the Democratic Republic of Congo, appointed by the UN Security Council.

In addition to his journalism work, Gregory has conducted research in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa for a multitude of organizations, including the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the UK government, NGOs, and research institutes. He holds the position of research associate at the South African Institute for International Affairs.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Gregory has a passion for music and entertainment. In the UK, he established and DJed at a club in Bristol for several years and continues to DJ on occasion. He is a devoted family man, married with three sons who are growing up astonishingly fast.
