Shadow Chasers Series (9-12 years)
This exciting series follows the adventures of Nom – a feisty young heroine. She and her friend Zithembe must draw on all their courage to battle the evil Army of Shadows and rescue loved ones from the dangerous Dreamworld.
Rich in African mythology and folklore, the series incorporates characters such as Mami Wata the water spirit and iKaggen the trickster praying mantis. The language level is for readers in the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4-6) who have English as an additional language. The series is also available in isiZulu.
Short chapters, accessible language, and a carefully selected font all make for ease of reading.
My Words, My World Series (9-12 years)
Halala Winner is the first book in Cover2Cover’s My Words, My
World series of multilingual, illustrated stories.
Young readers draw on many languages to make meaning, and
these relatable, exciting books celebrate the multilingual realities
of most young South Africans.
The series is aimed at readers in Grade 4. The colloquial language,
and the comic book format, make the stories accessible and
entertaining to even the most reluctant readers.
Halala Winner uses a mix of languages in one book: it is is
available in: isiXhosa and English; Sesotho and English; isiZulu and
English. The second book in this series Ayeye Noteksi is available
either in English, isiZulu or isiXhosa.
Anthologies
Cover2Cover has collections of plays and stories written by a
range of South African authors. Your Friend Is My Friend is the first
in our Class Acts play series. Plays are by nature colloquial,
following the patterns of speech, and these have been written to
be read aloud as a class.
Mandla’s Mark is a collection of exciting stories written by young
South Africans, covering a range of themes.
